Chief Minister's Carbon Footprint Dramatically Reduced

STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS

Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picado, has ditched the "Oily Rag" and has chosen a Tesla Signature Model S - an electric supercar built in Fremont California.

As part of a Gibraltar Government initiative to use "greener" vehicles, the Model S already has serious credentials being voted in 2013 World Green Car, Automobile Magazine's "Car of the Year" and one of Time Magazines Best 25 Inventions of the Year 2012.

The Tesla is charged from a regular electrical supply and with its 85 kWh lithium-ion battery independent test show it able to run for over 425 kms on one charge....no details yet of any appreciable increase in No.6 Convent Place's electricity bill!

The Tesla has a top speed of 125 mph and a 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds - which  compares very favourably with the Maserati Quattroporte VI  - a very similar looking car - that covers the same distance in 5.1 seconds.

As for the Jaguar, it will not be retired and is being re-assigned with the Chief Minister's "G1" number-plate now gracing the Tesla.

Gibraltar Cherished Car Numbers

Gibraltar Cherished Car Numbers

Do you know the Internet is a really curious place, in my case I am consistently  impressed how those who don't live in Gibraltar see this often overlooked British Overseas Territory.

We have been getting e-mails from many who continue consider a move to make Gibraltar their new home. As a business that's what we help you do!

We provide a range of professional services focussed on providing you with the very best advice to enable you to make an informed decision as to whether you too could be happy being a resident of Gibraltar.

In addition, we continue to add to our collection of "G1" to "G100" in celebration of next years anniversary of the 90th year of the "GBZ" (Gibraltar's Code) International Registration Code.

From our friends both in Gibraltar and elsewhere we are getting many e-mails with photos of relevant registration numbers. Today it's "G5" seen earlier today in down town Gib.

Please keep sending your photos so that by January 1st 2014 we should have a complete record of cars "G1" to "G100"!

That takes our total to 29 of the numbers between "G1" and "G100" come on guys let's see if we can complete our collection compilation....

Gibraltar's Cherished Car Numbers - Continued

Gibraltar's Cherished Car Numbers - Continued

As discussed in a previous post 2014 is the 90th Anniversary of the "GBZ" International Registration.

We are compiling a photographic record of as many G plated cars numbered "G1" to "G100" as we can.

We are pleased to add a further one today - more will follow with more support from our friends and contacts in Gibraltar:

54th member of UEFA

In May this year Gibraltar became the 54th Member of UEFA and after several weeks of jubilant celebrations it took the opportunity to paint a post box in celebration!

Plans are evolving for a new stadium and we hear regular information about the scheduling of likely matches which will appear on the Gibraltar Football Association's site http://www.gibraltarfa.com/ in due course.

The UEFA membership has opened the international door to both Women and Men's teams and has been shown to attract talent that has been playing in the English leagues to make themselves available for the Gibraltar national team. Former Manchester United, Southampton and Stoke City defender Danny Higginbotham has his "in principle" willingness to play for the national team who's manager, Allan Bula, is Higginbotham's uncle.

It is hoped that the UEFA membership, long blocked by Spain's objections will allow Gibraltar to take its justly deserved place amongst the FIFA membership and, in time, the International Olympic Committee.

It seems that the first UEFA outing for the National Team will be the Qualifiers for European Championship 2016. So watch this space for more news of where and when you will be able to see the Gibraltarian National Football team in action.

Gibraltar's Cherished Car Numbers

Gibraltar's Cherished Car Numbers

In 1924 Gibraltar was granted the use of the "GBZ" International Registration Letter (as Administered by the United Nations).

As part of the celebrations for the 90th Anniversary of the grant in 2014 we at www.GeeBeeZed.com have started compiling a photographic record of as many of the first 100 Gibraltarian car numbers - from "G1" to "G100" - that we have seen in and around Gibraltar.

The first 27 appear below.

If you own such a cherished Gibraltarian number and would like it to appear in this exclusive gallery please send a photo to mark@therightsgroup.com and we will add it to the collection in support of the 90th Anniversary of "GBZ".

New Gibraltar

Currently, the media profile of Gibraltar is at the highest it has been for nearly  thirty years. This gives us all a chance to review how Gib is seen by the outside world and how it can capitalise on its truly refreshed image.

In the war of words with Spain that have raged since mid-summer the prevailing thought of the majority is that Gibraltar has emerged a clear winner.

Previously regarded as a sleepy backwater of the British Empire, this vibrant and proactive community built on various religious faiths and a healthy slice of enterprise is experiencing a boost to its international profile.

We've all heard the rhetoric from the Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo concerning the same old chestnuts of the disputed borders and "Fiscal Paradise" - oh and with a new element thrown in - a disputed artificial reef.

Margallo's hare-brained notion of levying a €50.00 fee for those crossing the frontier on foot or by car is simply laughable and would not stand up to the slightest testing before the European Courts - so its back to the drawing board on that one.

The Madrid Administration was told in a TV interview by a Spaniard, the head of the local La Linea workers union - whose members comprise part of the nearly 5000 Spaniards who live over the border but are gainfully employed in Gibraltar - to "back off". So no friends there Mr Margallo!

The simple counters to these time-worn-thin arguments are that the Gibraltarian tax regime has just been given a clean bill of health by Brussels' Eurocrats and, following National Day (10th September) whilst the sovereignty issue continues to be a thorn in Madrid's side, the Right of Self-Determination for the 30,000 or so residents of the Rock is a sine qua non....and has been for as long as anyone can remember. So there's an end to that, Spain.

With the added and very vocal support for the people of Gibraltar from Queen Elizabeth and David Cameron, this writer is wondering whether the attempts by Madrid to shift local media's attention away from a deeper assessment of the villainous goings on of the current Spanish administration, with its comprehensive disclosure of cash bungs at the highest possible level, actually worked. Not sure it did.

I leaned an interesting fact last week from the Self-Determination for Gibraltar Group who want Gibraltar declassified as a Protectorate to allow it a full place at the UK's table a la the Isle of Man, thus permanently silencing Spanish claims. Around the time of the negotiations of the Treaty of Paris 1783 that ended the American Revolutionary War, Spain was tempted by certain concessions that included East and West Florida and the Isle of Menorca. It seems they were also offered Gibraltar. Guess what Spain chose ....yes and it wasn't Gibraltar. Bit late now don't you think.

So what are the current images of Gibraltar in the wider, non-Spanish world?

For the cruise ship tourists its the chocolate box top views of the Apes, cheap booze and fags, a stroll up Main Street and trip in the cable car to see the view. That hasn't changed and won't.

For those keen to consider Gib as their potential new home - and not just the location of a brass plate - the Rock is continuing to modernise and transforming itself into a welcoming and attractive Mediterranean community that compares very favourably with other locations, such as Monaco and the Channel Islands.

If you are considering whether you'd like to call Gibraltar "home" then we should line up a on-line chat about the potential benefits.

As with such matters there is never a one size fits all solution and we at GeeBeeZed.com have identified a series of strategic partners, law firms, accountants, company and trust managers and finance professionals who benefit from a wealth of experience in delivering their professional services that will be marshalled to your benefit.

My professional experience is that of a Non-Practising Solicitor but my personal experience is that I've done it. We moved to Gibraltar and now very proudly call the Rock our home.

Over the next few months we'll share our experiences and seek to provide those also willing to take the plunge with some practical pointers to make the transformation not only easy but a pleasure!

It really is time to see Gibraltar in a new light, a lot has already changed and there are fantastic plans to revolutionise the Rock, without damaging its heart.

Below you'll see some refreshingly updated views of new Gibraltar.

Will Gib feature in your planning? We do hope so.

Gibraltar - I Don't Know Why I Like It But I Do

This piece was originally written in 2008, a lot has changed to Gibraltar in the last five years the OECD White List, the new airport terminal and completion of the development at Ocean Village but fundamentally Gibraltar is still Gib or "GBZ" - since 1924 Gibraltar's international international vehicle registration code.

Our aim is to give a realistic view to those considering a relocation to Gibraltar and to make available a variety of resources to assist them with that process.

Gibraltar - I Don't Know Why I Like It But I Do

After a few days of Birthday celebration it was time to return my Mother to Gibraltar for her Easyjet flight home. A few days with an older relative tends to slow things down and Gib is the perfect end to a good visit. Compared to the mayhem of Malaga Airport – where I was mid last week meeting a client from the UK – which can be likened to the bling that is Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Gibraltar is a genteel Country House Hotel. Like the rest of the Rock, it’s stuck in a rather British time warp with metaphoric plumped up feather pillows and a breakfast of farm fresh eggs and bacon!

The unkind have likened Gib to Woking circa 1950 with vast expanses of Formica and the ever present whiff of tobacco. Indeed some of the clothes stores at the top of Main Street, stock the kind of garments that Grandfathers wore in the 1980’s – half suede leather and half wool relaxing jackets and bottom of the barrel colours of Lacoste T shirts.

In fact Gib’s airport building looks like a 1960’s Sainsbury’s with its domed roof and rather low ceiling. The “Duty Free” shop is spectacularly poor but if you ever need to buy a variety of English products by Barker and Dobson you’ll not find better.

My kids always send me to Gib with a short list of must have items from Morrison’s – and the diesel is cheap so worth a visit to fill up. Seedless grapes, fruit Winders and crumpets.

Driving to and through Gib can be treacherous. The Spur – as it’s affectionately known – from La Linea (Spain) onto the Rock can be a place of some conflict. Although there is a roundabout at which you can turn left to join the queue to enter Gib, God forbid you try. Hysteria breaks out as I tried. I am forced by some very pushy drivers to join the back to the Spur filter some 500m further north.

Casemates Square, with its curious blend of timeless and rather posh glass goods, fast food restaurants and shops selling linen tea towels with images of Gib and “made in china” Monkeys bearing the familiar red and white emblem of Gib – which I suppose are intended to ape those at the top of the Rock. Behind Casemates Square is a scruffy café and Pool Hall called “The Roxy”. I have noted before that there is an amazing blend of people in Gib but today sitting on the pavement outside the café are three people of indeterminate age. One is of Afro-Caribbean origin, another is of Asian origin and a third is very definitely of old Gib origin. In the usual course of event this group would have been completely unremarkable but for the fact that they are all wearing new white baseball caps promoting the current Gib phenomena – online gaming!

Pulling up at the supermarket, Morrison’s have recently refurbished extensively. A quick trip through the store picking up my bits – including fresh chillies that you don’t seems to be able to buy in Spain - and it’s up to the Express till.

On the plastic screen that protects the cashier from any would be thief there is a red sticker. It warns that unless you are 25 and can prove it you cannot buy alcohol in the store. When quizzed about the effect of this the cashier knew little but though it may have originated in the UK. I am not sure that such a move could resist a challenge from the Civil Liberties folk, but in Gib you clearly get the impression that it’s pretty much a law unto itself. Given the apparent lack of antisocial behaviour, I wonder whether conscription may be considered next!
